Welcome to Wareham Short Mat Bowling Club

The name Wareham Short Mat Bowling Club tells you everything really! We are a vibrant club which meets regularly in Wareham, Dorset (well just outside Wareham in Furzebrook to be exact|) to play short mat bowls. For those not acquainted with “short mat” bowls it is basically the game of lawn bowls adapted for playing indoors in village and community halls. It is popular with outdoors bowlers as a means of pursuing their passion in winter but there are many people who play “short mat” for the love of this form of the game alone.

The Wareham club is not only for the people of Wareham. The name reflects where we play rather than the place where our members live and we have members from Swanage, Wool, Crossways, Lychett, Upton and even Parkstone. Our common bond is the playing of “short mat” not where we live. The club is active at all levels of the game running weekly sessions for club members to enjoy social and competitive bowls. We also have our annual club singles, pairs and triples championships. As a club affiliated to the Dorset Short Mat Bowls Association we have teams in the county league and also have members who play in county competitions. We try to offer something for everyone regardless of individual ability and individual aspirations in the game.

We play all year round and welcome new members at any time. If you have played other forms of bowls you will quickly adapt and are welcome at any of our open sessions. If you have never played before you will need some instruction and coaching so please use the contact form on this website to get in touch and we will try and arrange a mutually convenient session to be able to spend time with you to get you started. This would normally be a Friday afternoon when we have capacity for an extra mat to teach on. You can come to two club sessions to ‘have a go’ before deciding whether to join.
